The Unwanteds is a fantasy book written by Lisa McMann and published in 2011 by Aladdin. The book is the first in a series, followed by The Unwanteds, Island of Silence.
The main Character is thirteen-year-old Alex Stowe has been caught drawing in the dirt with a stick, and in Quill creativity is a death sentence. Every year in Quill, thirteen-year-olds are sorted into categories: the strong, intelligent Wanteds go to university, and the artistic Unwanteds are sent to their deaths. On the day of the Purge Alex was declared an Unwanted, even while leaving behind his twin Aaron, a Wanted. Upon arrival at the destination where he expected to be eliminated, however, Alex discovers a stunning secret—behind the mirage of the “death farm” there is instead a place called Artime. In Artime, each child is taught to cultivate their creative abilities and learn how to use them magically, weaving spells through paintbrushes and musical instruments. Everything Alex has ever known changes before his eyes, and it’s a wondrous transformation.
The Unwanteds have been praised by Kirkus Reviews saying “The Hunger Games meets Harry Potter.” and by #1 New York Times Bestselling Author, Brandon Mull saying “Imagination runs wild in this creative adventure.”
This book was good, with all its magic and the struggle the twins face. I rate it a five out of five. I am currently preparing to read the sequel The Unwanteds, Island of Silence.
