This past week I’ve had the privilege to learn about a new program entering our school. This was mentioned to me by one of the main organizers, our own teacher Mr. Marcantonio. As he was talking to me one could see the excitement in his eyes about this program coming to real life.
The main idea of this program is to create a sustainable farm where both energy and food can be produced. The part of this idea that makes the farm sustainable is that the food is given to the animals and students to eat, while the scraps help give energy to new food through the process of composting.
One fact about this project is that when the school does create a garden, it will have all crops mixed together. The idea of this garden plan is that nature has survived for longer than humans and that if we stay out of natures’ way, nature will do the job. Once a sustainable farm is created then we won’t have to use herbicides and pesticides, the plants will be able to survive on their own. And if there are no chemicals being sprayed onto the plants, then the produce will be more organic. This means that those that eat the produce will also be healthier.
Mr. Marcantonio and a team of teachers are in the process of applying for grants to help fund this project. In order for everything to go as planned, the group hopes to see this sustainable farm complete and running in four years. Mr. Marcantonio hopes that if this sustainable farm does turn out as well as they hope, that they will be able to spread it to the public. Anyone who might be interested in this program can talk to Mr. Marc and he will help you figure out what you could do to help out with on this project.
Good luck to all involved in this program, and let’s hope for the best!
