Last week, the Galway Golden Eagles began their winter sports season, and with a new season comes tryouts. For basketball, Coach Toby Youngblood had to make decisions on 17 players trying out. Due to the low number, yet another JV team will not be playing this year. Three days of tryouts and constant player evaluations led Coach Younglood, Coach Fitzgerald, and Coach Meyers to come up with a 13-man roster for the upcoming varsity season that will begin with a scrimmage at the Tomahawks of Corinth on Friday. The first game takes place as part of the Hoosic Valley Tip-Off Tournament when the Golden Eagles take on the Loudonville Christian Eagles at 6pm on November 25th. The captains for this year’s basketball team are 3rd-year Varsity senior Cody Marshall and 2nd-year Varsity senior Shane Marshall. In all, there are four seniors, one junior, three sophomores, and four freshmen.The Golden Eagles look to improve on a dismal 2-14 season last year, giving them just 4 wins in the past two years. Many players are talking about shocking the WAC and possibly making the school’s first basketball Sectional appearance since Coach Kurt Redman’s 2008-09 team received a 9 seed before being eliminated in the first round by Hoosic Valley.
