SARATOGA SPRINGS–After a heartbreaking loss to Northville to begin the WAC schedule, the Galway Golden Eagles looked to bounce back against the Saratoga Central Catholic Saints on the road. Coming in, both teams were looking for their first win, as Galway was 0-3 and the Saints were 0-1. After losing many players due to graduation, the Saints had a completely different starting lineup and it looked as though this might be an even game.
Jamie Freebern put the Golden Eagles up 2-0 after sinking his first two foul shots on the day. However, the Saints responded with a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead after one period of play. From there, the Saints dominated the boards and outscored the Golden Eagles 13-8 in the second quarter to give the home team a 23-10 lead at the break. Cody Marshall’s layup at the buzzer kept the Eagles within 13, but the damage had been done. The second half had more scoring by both teams, but Saratoga Catholic still managed to outscore the Golden Eagles 17-9 to go up 40-19 after three periods of play. The lead would be plenty for the Saints who would go on to win 52-29 on their home floor. The win gives the Saints their first win and moves them to 1-1 on the year. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles drop to 0-4 heading into Friday’s contest with WAC North leader Fort Plain (2-1).
Cody Marshall led the Golden Eagles with 10 points, while Jamie Freebern added 8 as well. Nick Manna had 4 points in the game, while Dylan Gregory had 3 points. Shane Marshall and Dan Diaz had 2 points each.
For the Saints, John Walsh led with 16 points, and was aided by Jesse Winters 11.
