GALWAY–As the sun slowly rose on February 4th, members of the Science Club were on their way to the College of St. Rose to compete in Science Olympiad.
The competition consisted of different science related events ranging from Anatomy and Physiology to Rocks and Minerals. Each event only required two people to participate, and the each participant competed in an average of three. The day was split up into six 45 minute blocks with each participant having their own schedule.
In most of events, tests were taken, and members of the team were allowed to bring a reference sheet to help them answer the questions. There were also building events where students had to come prepared with a tower, gravity vehicle or helicopter. On a student’s down time they could “study” for their next event or take part in various intense board games that were brought.
The whole day was a fun time and at the end of all the competition, there is an awards ceremony. Places for each event are announced as well as the overall placing of teams in the competition. The Galway Science Club did rather well this year, placing in 3 events. Harry Griffin and Lucas Remscheid placed 5th in Thermo Dynamics and Jessica Demarest and Hannah Smith placed 5th in Forestry and 3rd in Write It Do It. The team placed 8th overall out of 23 teams. They are looking forward to the beginning of next February when they will take part in it again.
Science Club members also helped out at the district’s Science Saturday, held at the elementary school on January 28. They set up stations that were about science and the main focus of the day was to try to interest children in the fun world of science. There was an ice cream making station (where kids could make ice cream that was actually enjoyable), a slime making station, a coin cleaning station and many others. There was also a planetarium and a woman with reptiles.
The kids seemed to enjoy the day wandering from station to station, in awe at the wonders they witnessed. The club hopes that the interest the kids showed at Science Saturday will continue for the rest of their lives, so they can explore the world around them.
