GALWAY–The badminton tournament came to an exciting finish today as the tournament ended between Mr. Powers and Mr. Swain, who hadn’t lost a single match, and the Smith brothers, Cameron and Brady. The Smiths managed to work their way back from a first day loss to last year’s runner-ups Nick Manna and Cody Marshall to win five straight matches to get back to the finals. Meanwhile, Mr. Swain and Mr. Powers needed just five matches total to lock up their spot in the finals, looking to win their second title, but first since defeating Irena Longworth and Heather Sickler in 2009. This is the teacher duo’s third appearance in the finals, with last year being the only year in a four year span in which they didn’t make the finals. The duo were defeated by Marshall and Manna in the loser’s bracket final.
This year’s championship was filled with athletic plays and long volleys. The losses from earlier in the tournament are erased from the Smiths record, meaning that in order to win today, the teams played a best-of-three series to 15. The first team to win 2 matches will be the 2012 champion.
The winners were Cameron and Brady Smith.
