GALWAY–What do you fill with water, make with a two liter soda bottle, duct tape, fins, and possibly some cat litter or dirt? Why a rocket of course! On November 3rd at around two in the afternoon Mr. Darlington, Galway’s Physics/Chemistry teacher, hosted the 2012 Rocket Day across from the bank in the recreational soccer fields. Parents and students of all ages were welcomed to see how far their homemade rocket could fly along side students from his Physics class.
Fifty rockets made an appearance on the field that day, all with their own twist! Some rockets had glitter, others had feathers, they even had that fancy print duct tape we all gawk at in Walmart. Students rockets were first given a number of their launch, then one by one rockets would be shot into the air at the launch area. Participants crossed their fingers as the distances were recorded by volunteer physics students and an overall high score was made. Each rocket flew twice and if it made the top ten after those two rounds, it would go into the third round to try and win high score. Although some rockets crash landed and/or blew up at the moment of launch, spirits were lifted when Mr. Darlington (on more than one occasion) put dry ice into a sealed soda bottle and tossed it onto the field, leading to a very loud explosion. Overall the record distance and highscore for Rocket Day was two hundred and twenty yards made by two physics students Rebekah Reichard and Paige Hammond. Congrats, and thank you for everyone who participated and volunteered in this years Rocket Day, despite the freezing cold weather. It was definitely a sight to see.

I think the pictures are awesome and I kinda wish I went now 🙂 Even though a few of the people look cold 🙂
