National Junior Honor Society helps get food to local families for the holidays
GALWAY–After school on Tuesday, December 16th, the National Junior Honor Society went on a field trip to the Scotch Church to help out with the local food drive. Ms.Ethier led the group of volunteers and provided transportation with the perishable goods that the Galway Central School District collected. Julia Holbrook’s dad was the bus driver; she liked that and getting the opportunity to help people less fortunate than she is.
When we first got to the church, the group had to unload the canned goods. Through the creative idea of the assembly line, we found we could unload more food in a timely fashion. After we unloaded the bus, we then had to organize the goods. Those who were in charge had already labeled areas all around the pantry for their respective food. At first, I thought we would be there forever and have a minimal amount of fun. However, time went by quickly as we sorted the food. Even though the room was hectic, I was elated to be around such noble people and had a lot of fun laughing. The highlight of my day was laughing about whether or not mac and cheese is a vegetable. Quinn Sakala felt similarly: “I had more fun than I expected. I liked the system and the people there.”
This endeavor allowed me to learn more about giving back to community. I am sure the people in charge of the food drive are grateful for our time and service. Jon Fajans was also glad to help out: “I always support a good cause. I had a great time with my friends and learned more about hard work.” Hannah Thompson shared she had been part of the process at the church before: “I thought it was a great experience. I think I did well helping out despite my injury!”
Thanks to the Varsity wrestling team who loaded the food onto the special bus.
