In late October, Galway’s fifth and sixth graders took part in “The Hovercraft Project,” a fun activity where kids get to build and ride a vehicle and test the results. The hovercraft program has been done for multiple years in Galway but last year fifth graders did not participate so this year the sixth graders and fifth graders took part in the program.
The Hovercraft Project website says, “The idea of a hovercraft started in a classroom and has developed over the last 20 years into a fully immersive, 5 hour STEM project.”
Sixth and fifth graders got to make actual hovering machines and ride them this year. The hovercraft project was provided by the school for students and everyone had a great time. During the project, kids were put in groups and had to organize, assign jobs and collaborate as a group to make a machine. At the end of the building process, people raced their machines, tested how far they went and tested how many people could ride on a machine.
Many people loved the project like Edmund Perkins who said “it was a fun challenge” and shared he felt a strong sense of accomplishment when the hovercraft was completed.
Mr. Schaperjahn commented, “The project was awesome. It was a great opportunity for kids to build and have fun”. Everybody had so much fun on hovercraft day.
