On Friday, March 11th, 3:30-5 PM, there was only one place the elementary kids wanted to be. That was the National Honor Society’s annual carnival. As a kid, I always loved this carnival and looked forward to it. I’m so happy that they decided to continue it. About 100 kids showed up, all with smiles on their faces and fresh dollar bills held tightly in their hands. The excitement in the air was obvious.
About a month ago, NHS teamed up together and came up with many ideas for the carnival that had been popular in previous years, as well as some new ones they thought the kids would enjoy. We had The Man Eating Chicken, a lollipop tree, clowns and face painting, among many other fun events.
The proof that the kids were really enjoying themselves was when I came into the gym to take some pictures and I saw one little boy standing by Angelina Valente. He asked her to help him with his candy bag. After, he looked up at her and said, “This is really fun.” He was so genuine and matter-of-fact about it that it just proved to me why NHS does this yearly carnival: for the kids!
Another little girl came up to me and made sure she got my attention. Then she asked me if I knew about the man eating chicken. I answered yes.
“Really? Did you know that it is a man sitting at a table eating chicken?” It took all I had not to burst out laughing. She was so surprised that the “man eating chicken” had been a trick.
So, NHS members, I would definitely say that all our planning and work paid off. The kids really enjoyed it, and everyone else looked like they were having a great time. If you make someone else smile, you will find yourself smiling too. I think this was definitely a proven fact at the NHS carnival.
