Rural Sustainable Farm Project
Description
In our small, rural school district in upstate NY, we are creating a sustainable farm for the school and the community. Students and staff, grades K-12, will have the opportunity to work in greenhouses on the property to grow food that may be used by the school or sold in the community. Through their work on the project students will be able to have real world experiences and enrich their learning. This innovative, cross-curricular idea will challenge students and help them thrive.

Learning Objectives
Through the farm, they will be able to learn various subjects at a deeper level. Science, math and health are topics that will clearly be covered, but in addition, students can learn how to market the items they grow, use technology to track the experiments and growth of plants in the greenhouses. They will write news stories and profiles of other students and their position in this community of learners. Children will have the unique opportunity to see their project grow and sustain itself.
Materials
We will use the Flip camera to record students as they work in the greenhouses on various projects. This will document the learning process and help teachers and students map the future of the project and where we would like to grow. We will use the tablet in this setting to record data of various projects and the grades of the students that are involved. We plan to keep the school and local community informed of the success of our work, every step of the way.
Other Information
We have already written and received a grant from a local group (the Dockstader Trust). This grant enabled us to purchase the 5 greenhouses that will get this project off the ground. Teachers of many grade levels and disciplines are involved, and we are looking to the project as an exciting and unique opportunity for our students. We are a small, rural district, and as such we have a K-12 building an excellent staff who is always looking to expand the curriculum and offerings for our students. Your grant will help us!

Mr. Marc makes learning both a life long skill and a hands on opportunity for all students. Just one of many reasons that the GCSD seems to be a little well kept secret amongst other communities around us. GO GALWAY!!!!!
