Ghost Peppers are considered by some to be the hottest pepper in the world. The Guinness Book of Records had deemed them the “Hottest Chili in the World” back in 2007 but since then supposedly a hotter pepper has been discovered. One Ghost Pepper reaches up to 300 times the hotness of a Jalapeno Pepper and supposedly 10,000 times the hotness of Tabasco. Ghost Peppers are said to be much hotter than even Habanero Peppers. I’ve never had a Habanero pepper so I wouldn’t know how hot the pepper is.
Back around Halloween, Josh Bailey brought in Ghost Peppers to show around at lunch after he got them from his Uncle. He chopped up the Ghost Peppers into little pieces because I don’t think a person could eat a full Ghost Pepper. He gave me a clump of the pepper with three seeds which was enough to make my entire mouth numb. My friend Kevin had it worse though because he ate three seeds plus a clump of the pepper. I don’t even know the total number of seeds he consumed but let me say, he was in a lot of pain. He drooled like a St. Bernard for the next half hour and had some noticeable heartburn. He says it’s a mistake he’d never make again.
Ghost Peppers have a short growing season in the Midwest and in parts of India and Bangladesh so they aren’t readily available. If you do come in contact with one, make sure you wear gloves and cover your eyes when cutting into a Ghost Pepper. Also, wash your hands when you’re finished touching or eating the Ghost Pepper. Some people like spicy treats but our skin and eyes don’t respond well to irritants like the acid contained in peppers like this.
